Our vacation rental cabin is located in West Glacier, Montana — one mile from the west entrance to Glacier National Park. It fronts directly on the Middle Fork of the Flathead River at the confluence with McDonald creek. Across the street is the 18 hole Glacier View Golf Course, and across the river is Glacier National Park.
Glacier International Airport is 24 miles (about a 34 minute drive) from the cabin. The airport is serviced by America West Airlines, Big Sky Airlines, Northwest Airlines, Horizon Air, and Delta Airlines. It is five hours travel time, door to door, from the San Francisco Bay Area (via Oakland, Salt Lake City, Kalispel on Delta Airlines) — about the same as a drive to Mt. Shasta or Yosemite National Park. Amtrak stops in West Glacier and Whitefish.
The 2300 square foot home has
Built in 1987 of cedar in a rustic Montana-style architecture, it features a huge (eight person) hot tub with massive front and rear decks. See photos »
We have furnished the cabin with comfortable Arts & Crafts-era antiques and new furniture from The Craftsman Home, in Berkeley, California. Satellite television with a DVD/VCR player and a stereo tuner with CD player comprise the electronics. The area is serviced by Verizon cellular service with a strong signal. Dial-up connection to the Internet is available via the land telephone line. (Sorry, at this time high speed internet access is not yet available, but it is coming.)
The kitchen is fully equipped with settings for twelve people, an electric range, dishwasher, double sink, trash compactor, refrigerator, microwave, toaster oven, blender, electric can opener, electric coffee maker, cordless telephone with answering machine, and the usual pots, pans, and accessories. The laundry room has a washer, dryer and ironing board with iron.
The rear deck has a built in acrylic hot tub for as many as eight people. A gas barbeque and dining for six with various other outdoor seating options completes the outdoor setting. The rear deck is only a few feet from the south bank of the river.
The town of West Glacier is at the entrance to Glacier Park. The famous “Going to the Sun” road starts in West Glacier and goes all the way across the Park, offering countless opportunities for access to the Park interior.
West Glacier features Glacier Outdoor Center, a major rafting and outdoor outfitter, two family style restaurants, and the Belton Chalet, a rustic gourmet restaurant and spa. A grocery store, saloon (this is Montana after all), gift shops, post office and gas stations complete the amenities available. As well, there is a full-size Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton in the Alberta visitor center.
The town of Apgar Village is just inside the Park on Lake McDonald and offers lake access, a restaurant, and gift stores. It is about a two mile drive from the house. The Lake McDonald Lodge is about ten miles away and offers a fine restaurant, lake tours, and “Jammer” tours of the “Going to the Sun” road.
